The freedom and activity that come with spending more time outdoors in the summer months can mean an increase in allergy symptoms for some children. Although allergic conditions seen during this season are often dismissed as a simple cold or temporary sensitivity, they can significantly affect children’s quality of life if the right precautions are not taken.
During the summer, pollen, grass, weeds, outdoor mould and various insects can trigger allergic reactions. In children with allergic constitutions in particular, symptoms such as a runny nose, frequent sneezing, watery eyes, itching, a blocked nose and a cough are observed. In some children, these symptoms may be accompanied by shortness of breath and wheezing. Dr. Çiğdem Şenol, a Paediatrician at Medline Adana Hospital, issued a warning and offered advice, noting that this condition can negatively affect children’s quality of life.
Often mistaken for a common cold
Summer allergies are often mistaken for the common cold. However, the likelihood of an allergy is higher in cases where there is no fever, and symptoms such as a runny nose, itchy eyes and sneezing persist for weeks. Whilst the common cold usually clears up within a few days, allergic symptoms can continue as long as exposure to the allergen persists.
Pollen is a factor
Due to increased time spent outdoors, complaints related to grass and pollen exposure are more common during the summer months. As pollen levels rise, particularly in the early morning and on windy days, it is important for sensitive children not to spend long periods outdoors at these times. Ensuring hands, face and clothing are cleaned after playing in the park can also help reduce allergen exposure.
Beware of insect stings!
Insect and bee stings can also trigger allergic reactions during the summer months. Whilst mild redness and swelling are common, some children may experience more severe reactions. However, if symptoms such as difficulty breathing, widespread rash, or swelling of the lips or tongue occur, medical assistance must be sought immediately.
Clean your house regularly
Pollen entering houses through open windows during this season also contributes to an increase in symptoms. Therefore, during periods of high pollen levels, regular cleaning of the house, frequent changing of bed linen, and ensuring children take a shower after coming indoors can be beneficial.
Take precautions against summer allergies
It is important to consult a specialist if allergy symptoms in children persist for a long time or reach a level that affects daily life. Furthermore, simple precautions taken during the summer help to significantly reduce allergy-related complaints in children. In particular, for children with allergic constitutions, a preventive approach not only helps to maintain their quality of life but also contributes to preventing potential health issues that may arise in the future.
